Pregnancy Hydration: Water versus Sports Drinks & Soda
I'm pregnant, so I know I need at least eight glasses of water per day. Can I drink some juice, sports drinks or soda instead?
Hydration is of utmost importance during pregnancy, as dehydration can cause significant complications. Although juices and sodas are a source of water, they are also a source of empty calories and ingredients you may not want for yourself or your baby.
Juices, sodas and sports drinks have a high amount of sugar, often in the form of high-fructose corn syrup, a type of sugar that can be especially harmful. High amounts of sugar (in any form) is especially unhealthy for pregnant women, as it increases the risk of developing gestational diabetes. Even though a pregnant woman needs to take in extra calories, a healthy diet full complex carbohydrates like whole grains and fruit is much more beneficial then a diet full of empty sugar calories. Ultimately, water is the best source of hydration when pregnantand even when you're not pregnant.
