Foods Containing Alcohol & Pregnancy
Can I eat foods that contain alcohol while I'm pregnant?
Foods containing alcohol should be acceptable as long as the alcohol has had a chance to burn off during the cooking process. For example, Bananas Foster uses a flambeau process in which you can see the flames burn lower as the alcohol burns off. Just be aware that these types of foods do retain a small amount of alcohol.
The U.S. Department of Health recommends drinking no more than one or two units of alcohol once each week while pregnant. A unit of alcohol is equivalent to one beer, one glass of wine or one shot of hard liquor. However, because there have been several recent studies that show a connection between a mother's alcohol consumption and low birth weight babies, I recommend avoiding alcohol altogether.
