Acupuncture & Pregnancy Backache
Can acupuncture help relieve my pregnancy backache and sciatica?
Lower backache and sciatica during pregnancy can arise from an old injury being stressed by new demands on the body and/or from an underlying weakness or blockage of qi, or energy.
When I treat lower backache during pregnancy or sciatica during pregnancy, I use a variety of approaches. Acupuncture alone can be too strong for this area, so I often use moxa (an herb that is burned nearby to bring heat into the area) and massage, as well as specific exercises and meditation techniques to relieve the pain.
A sedate lifestyle and history of difficult relationship experiences can predispose a woman to problems in the lower back, legs and pelvis. These happen to be the areas that store fear, and all women experience some anxiety about their pregnancy and upcoming labor. Also, old fears, just like old injuries, can be reawakened.
