why does my vagina smell so bad?
I am 28 weeks pregnant. why does my vagina smell so bad? i get outta the shower and almost right after it starts to smell funny! I've already asked the doctor and she just told me to drink more water. I know its not a yeast infection because I dont feel itchy or painful urinating. I just have smelly watery discharge. I dont remeber going through this my first pregnancy.. so I wonder if something is wrong and nobody has checked me? could it be the amniotic fluid? is anyone else experiencing the same thing?

OK ladies, I am having my 3rd baby and am also having the same problem! I am 31 weeks and started noticing this weird smell and the itching at about 25 weeks. Went to the dr and they said I was fine no infection. Gave me a few little bits of advice though (thank GOD for women drs LOL) 1st trimming is a great idea, the hairs get infused with these smells that us pregos can smell miles away....onto 2nd it really isn't as bad as you think. If you're in a committed relationship and your boyfriend or husband is willing to give an honest answer like mine did you will feel a little better. My boyfriend said: "it smells differant but I wouldn't classify it as a bad smell." I think after he said that I did realize that it was differant and maybe that was my biggest problem that it wasn't my 'normal' odor!! 3rd yes the itching is a bitch!!!! go out and grab something for the itching I won't say what because it would be medical advice but yes your dr can help you make that decision. Stop worrying eventually your body will be yours again and you will have another little body that makes you forget all about your body. If you really think that something is wrong get it checked out! For now your health and the health of your unborn child is very important!! Good luck ladies! OH and I haven't noticed that 'smell' or itched in over 2 weeks! GO ME GO ME!!!!!

You're not alone. Throughout my pregnancy, vaginal ichiness has been awful. OB says it's totally normal - but it's ruined my sex life and has made me terribly uncomfortable. I feel like I could shower constantly yes never really feel fresh. I just hope this goes away once baby comes...
omg I totally agree. This is my 2nd pregnancy and with the first one I had no problems but with this one I have a constant itch and funky smell :( (I dont have an infection, I have been checked 2x) the first time they just gave me diflucan just in case and I was on that for a few weeks, when it didnt worked they re-checked me and gave me nyastatin. But they say its not an infection but the cream will help the itching. Well, it does an okay job but I dont want to have to use it everyday! what a pain! I am hopnig that after the pregnancy things will go back to normal or I will scream! lol its a pain to constantly be itchy and never feel refreshed!

This is my 3rd pregnancy...and this is my first time with the same problem you have! I am almost 35wks and started noticing the different smell about 4 weeks ago. No infections, the dr checked. I have noticed I am loosing bits and pieces of my mucus plug. I take 2 showers a day to keep the smell down and do not have any hair down there as I make sure to keep it gone, because of the smell. Dr. says it's normal and my hubby doesn't seem to notice. Remember as women we tend to freak out over things that men don't notice or don't care about. I can't give you any cures but just wanted ya to know I feel ya, and until I read your posts I thought I was the only one!

Remember also that your sense of smell is amped up so something that might smell mild could seem horrible right now, drink lots of water and see if it gets better. Like PP have mentioned use a pantiliner and change it often and you could use baby wipes when you use the restroom and try a feminie wash and air dry.

If you are concerned that it might be amniotic fluid leaking, try squatting naked over the bathroom floor for a few minutes (before your shower so you aren't just dripping water). Amniotic fluid will create a steady drip if you are leaking it, and will make a little puddle on the floor. If it is that, call your doctor right away. Realistically though, pregnant women have all kinds of strange smells. I agree with the trimming the hair suggestion, and frequently changed panty liners. Avoid baby powder (in case you were tempted) though as the corn starch kind particularly invites excess yeast.

Wow we have the same exact scenario! On my second pregnancy and have been experiencing some funky smells from my vagina. Not sure the cause since that has never happened before. But i'm glad you posted your inquiry, going to see what some of the replies suggest.

The only thing I can add is that amniotic fluid is odorless, so that shouldn't be the problem.
Actually amniotic fluid is not odorless, but it is clear. It is often reported to smell "fleshy" or sweet.

Ruling out any infections PPs have mentioned, if you are still having problems with it, try keeping everything down there well ventilated. After you get out of the shower, chill out naked under a fan for a bit until everything is air dried. Wear baggy pants (preferably cotton) or dresses. Get some thin pantyliners if the discharge is what is smelly. And even though it doesn't sound like it, if you are letting hair grow out down there, your regular smell will be a little more intense...plus the extra insulation will make you sweat/smell more. That's all I can think of...good luck! :)
I agree. You should keep yourself atleast trimmed up, because your discharge will stick to your hairs and cause the smell to be much more intense. Keep trimmed and keep as clean as possible, as you should. I would still see a doctor to rule out any infection though, because if the smell really is that bad then more than likely something is wrong down there.

Sounds like a bacterial infection. It's very common during pregnancy because your vaginal pH changes. You have a couple options. You can get an antibiotic from your doctor, but that leaves you open to yeast infection. My best advice is to make a solution with 1 cup water to 2 TBS cider vinegar and wash your vagina and vulva twice a day for 3 days. THis corrects your pH and kills most unfriendly bacteria without hurting the bacteria that's supposed to be in there.

Could be bacterial vaginosis, it's just as common as a yeast infection. Instead of an overgrowth of yeast it's an overgrowth of bacteria and it makes your vagina smell funky. I got them before I was pregnant and they seem to come more often now that I'm pregnant. Only difference now is that I can't take the oral prescription, I have to use a vaginal insert. You can't give it to your partner it's not like that and the only risk just like any other infection would be preterm labor. It's an easy diagnosis just a vaginal swab and an easy fix. I get them so frequent that my OB just gave me a few refills of the prescription. I can pick out the smell the day I start to get a BV infection, that's how distinct the smell is.

Sounds like an infection. Also yeast doesn't always itch. I am prone to UTI's and yeast during pregnancy and I use Grapefruit Seed Extract in juice to prevent it every other day but you may need to get a swab done just to be sure. If it is an infection it can set off preterm labor or cause problems forr the baby. If you find out it's not, then consider things like how often you are having sex (every time my husband and I have sex I clean up fully or it does smell in the morning).
Good luck.
