Hook Effect
Has anyone here heard of the Hook Effect? Women feel they are pregnant but get persistant negative home pregancy test results (and theyre not testing too early), only to find out later (sometimes in the 2nd or 3rd trimester) that they are truly pregnant. Their hCG levels were too high to show up on standard HPTs and can only be detected with an ultrasound or in some cases a blood test. In many cases these women experienced a pregnancy with twins or more.
Ive heard of several people (whom I know personally, not on internet forums) who had negative HPTs but in a doctors blood test were positive and resulted in having a healthy child several months later.
Im beginning to not trust HPTs.

Thanks, I tried calling my doctor but there must be an epedemic in my town or something because theyre booked! I know its important to see the doctor, but our grandmothers did these things on their own and it didnt kill our parents (because we're obviously sitting here!) so a little bit more waiting shouldnt hurt.

Im not claiming to have this happening to me quite yet, but Ive gotten several negative test results and even after putting the thought out of mind, getting out of town to clear my head, and trying to move on, my body still keeps acting up. So I did a little research and the Hook Effect just struck me as interesting.
Im scheduling a blood test for Monday to set myself straight as to whats really going on. Could just be in my head...who knows!
Good luck and let us know how the testing goes!

I know two people who said this happened to them during their pregnancies. Urine tests wouldn't work on them, but the blood tests came back positive. They still found out early in their pregnancies, though. They all had single children.

I've never heard of that, either!
I know there is a false negative rate for HPTs but it is relatively low. If I were getting negative tests and my period was several weeks late, I would go ahead and call my dr to figure out what was going on.

I have never heard of this. I am sure everyone is different but I tested at like 9 dpo and got 2 lines on a First Response and I was told that it showed up so quickly because I was carrying twins. I took several pregnancy tests over the next couple of weeks until my OB appt because I still could not believe it was true and they were all positive
