American state names you love
Besides Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia, what are some names of US states that you could see working on a little one?
I'm really liking:
Alabama
Indiana
Tennessee
What about you?

as far as Alabama, i have a cousin named this and every one calls him Bama, which you might be able to get away with in the back woods of GA, but in other parts of the country Bama is slang for ugly or ghetto.

having 3 girls runs in my family. i only have 1, named Georgia b/c that's where i'm from. hubby is from Virginia and we now live in N. Carolina. the family jokes all the time that we should have 2 more so we can have the whole set.

I think Alaska could pass as a little girl name and Montana/Dakota for a boy. York could maybe be cool for a boy toy. My all time favorite though is Carolina on a girl! :)

I really don't like place names at all, I think they sort of just ask for teasing, especially if you're actually in that place. However, I rather adore Alaska. I would never use it as a first name, but maybe, maybe, as a middle name.

I really like Indiana nn Indy.
I also like Arizona nn Ari, California nn Callie, Louisiana, Montana, York (after NY), Dakota

I like the various forms of Georgia. I like Carolina but not pronounced the same as the state name, I prefer car-oh-LEE-nuh or cair-oh-LEE-nuh.
I'm sure Montana could work, and I actually don't mind Arizona. A lot of state capitals could work too: Olympia, Carson (for Carson City which was probably named after a person anyway), Phoenix (obviously), Cheyenne, Helena (again, quite obvious), Augusta (love August!), Lincoln (was a name first, obviously), Austin, etc. :)

My dad loves state names and really wanted to name me either Wyoming or Nebraska. Personally, I love the names and I think they are adorable. If I ever had kids, I would seriosuly consider naming them after states. I especially like Wyoming, Arkansas, and Tennessee.

Just thought of this... if I was going for a place/state theme, I would probably consider Arizona, too. Don't especially love it, but I do like it for its nicknames (particularly Ari and Zoe!).
I know an Arizona! She's 17 and I just love her name! It fits her well. HEr whole anme is Arizona Nova and I just looove the way it flows and sounds.

That is too funny! A while back I was dead set on thinking Tennessee was a great name for a girl (nn Tenny). EVERYONE thought I was crazy and I've since parted ways with it - partly because my taste changed and partly because I'm just too chicken. I would still adore seeing it on a little girl though. :)
I do think the more common state names would be Dakota, Georgia, Carolina, and Virginia. (I know a Virginia and she goes by Ginny).
And I think Maine wouldn't be too out there. (In the movie Carolina, the sisters are named Georgia, Carolina, and Maine).
Of all those I think I like Georgia the best.
However, I have met a Nevada and she's a wonderful woman.

I wasn't feeling any of those, they just don't sound like names to me.. The only American state name I really like is Dakota, more so on a girl than a guy (:

Um, I have a very tame name style, lol. So I'm not sure there are any besides Carolina that I'd use. Maybe Montana (nn Annie) or Alabama (nn Allie or Alba)... or MAYBE Alaska. I like the sound/image, but I'm way too chicken to actually use it. I do think it's really pretty, though, and I've heard it considered as a name.
