Amsterdam
This was Leonardo DiCaprio's character's name in Gangs of New York. What do you think?

i'm not totally turned off by the name itself (though not fond of it) but i do really think that when you name a child after a place that place should have some sort of real significance to you, otherwise you might as well be naming your kid Lothlorien or Narnia or for that matter any other random noun you thought was pretty.
my daughter's name is Georgia. we really wanted to give her a family name but all the good ones were taken so instead we named her Georgia b/c some branches of my family have been in that region since before white people knew the continent even existed. i love Georgia (the state) and spent my childhood there. the name is really significant to me.

I would feel sorry for anybody with this name, even if they were fictional. Besides the fact that it's a random place name, it sounds like a rodent and then a mild profanity.

I agree with this, too. Just curious; was it the character's given name or a nickname?
It was his real name!
I'm pretty sure this was a fictional character right? Not a real person.
Yes, the characters are fictional, though Daniel Day-Lewis's was based on a real person.

Nope.
I'm not a fan of place names in general, but I feel like the -dam ending would just cause all sorts of problems. Amsterdam is a nice place, but it sounds terrible as a name....

This is definitely not useable as a real name. I would pity that child.

Honestly, I think it's taking the place-name trend way too far. Amsterdam?! It doesn't seem usable to me at all.
I agree with this. I would hate roll cal is my name was Amsterdam...Not to mention that kids would emphasize he DAM(n) part or maybe call him Hamster.
