Elias (Spanish Pronunciation)
My cousin's girlfriend is due March 10th. She is from a mexican family and my cousin is to put it mildly the whitest white boy. lol. They are adorable together and even tho theyre young I know they'll be good parents. They know its a boy and have decided on Elias Collin. But the spanish pronunciation of Elias which I believe is (el-EE-us) I tend towards the "normal" pron. (uh-LYE-us)
Now I liked it when I thought it was (uh-LYE-us). And this may sound selfish but I wanted a daughter named Eliana. My bf's late mother's name was Ellen and I wanted a way to honor her. (I never met her she died 20 years ago). But we have decided our son will be named after our father's so I thought it would be nice to name her after his mother.
Are Elias and Eliana too close? (they would basically be cousins)
And is Elias (el-EE-us) the correct spanish pronunciation? (we heard the name through an email so idk)

Just wanted to point out that Collin would be pronounced "coy-yeen" in Spanish. Not sure if it's a family name or if they care, but Colin or Calen would be closer to the English pronunciation.
As far as Elias and Eliana, I think they are both awesome names, and great for little cousins!!

I'm not sure about the Spanish pronunciation of Elias but I agree that Elias and Eliana are fine for cousins.

With cousins, no, it does not matter at all. Elias and Eliana as siblings would be too matchy, but for cousins, it's fine. My cousins name is Aarika, and I was very nearly named Erika- we're only 5 months apart in age. Honestly, I think even that would be fine. We're close friends, but because we don't live together, it's completely fine.

I actually don't think it's that much of an issue. Elias would be eh-LEE-ahs (as Ashley said) which has a different emphasis than Eliana (eh-lee-AH-nah). Also, you want to use Eliana for its meaning which is very significant! I say don't worry about it. You will be able to say, "oh, it's after Ellen, his mother" and no one will think twice :) Good luck!

Elias is lovely! Yes, the Spanish pronunciation is eh-LEE-ahs. I think you could still use Eliana--my dad has a cousin who shares his exact name, and if I was a boy there was a good chance my parents would have given my cousin's FN as a MN to me (Michael James to Andrew Michael). I think Elias and Eliana would be fine.
Good luck!
Just thought of this--I know siblings named Delbert and Delores. Not quite so similar as Elias and Eliana, but still pretty close. I still think you could still use Eliana, though, especially since it's honoring.

I'm not sure if el-LEE-us is the correct 'Spanish' pronunciation, but it is a pronunciation, so...
And it does sound like it's more Spanish sounding than uh-LYE-us so I'd say yes. Hahaha.
Eliana and Elias are pretty close, especially if they'd go with the el-LEE-us pronun.
I'm trying to think if I know anyone who has a similar name to a relative... I have a small family though. Uhhh wll I know a Joe and Joan that are siblings... Those are reeeally close. And they're siblings, which are, you know, closer than cousins. It all depends on how awkward you'd feel giving your child a similar name to your cousin's.
