Choosing Your Baby's Name

What's in a name? Plenty, considering it'll stay with your baby for her whole life. Gee, not too much pressure for parents-to-be to find the perfect name— not too dorky, not too crazy, not too overused. Good thing we've got over 50,000 baby names to choose from!

Some lucky parents pick out their future baby's name when they're still in kindergarten. But for everyone else, choosing a name can be stressful. Here, a few helpful hints:

Figure out what kind of name you want. Long or short? Traditional or modern? Plain or flowery? Easy to spell or exotic? The clearer you are about your criteria from the beginning, the easier it will be for you to make your final decision.

Consider naming in honor of someone you love. Many families like to pass on names from generation to generation. Some name for the living; others name for the dead. If you want to honor a relative or friend and don't love his or her name, you can use the first letter instead.

Look for a name that will grow with your child. What's cute for a baby may not be so cute when the baby is on his first job search.

Keep your last name in mind. You'll want the first and last name to work together, as well as any nicknames of the first name. And don't forget to look at the initials and make sure they don't spell anything you don't like.
