The Female Infertility Physical Exam

We hate to break it to ya, but you can't be shy during a physical fertility exam!

Once your doctor has recorded your medical history, she will conduct a very detailed physical examination. Here's what to expect:

  • She will examine your general health and physical appearance
  • She will record your height, weight, and blood pressure
  • She will look at the results of a urinalysis test
  • She will listen to your heart and lungs with a stethoscope
  • She will examine your secondary sex characteristics (like breast development and fat distribution)
  • She will feel your thyroid gland (to check if it's enlarged)
  • She will examine your breasts and squeeze your nipples (to check for discharge)

  • She will feel your abdomen (for lumps and bumps or painful spots)
  • She will examine your vagina and outer genital organs (to look for signs of infection, sores, growths or unusual narrowing or erosion of the cervix)
  • She will do a Pap smear (to check for cancer and STDs)
  • She will feel your reproductive organs (to check size, shape, or for an irregularities)
  • She will examine your rectum (to check for usual growths, bulging or pocketing)
