Eating Raw Cookie Dough

Is it safe to eat raw cookie dough?

Raw cookie dough made with raw eggs should not be consumed. Raw eggs are potentially hazardous because they can serve as sources of harmful bacteria, including Salmonella, which can cause serious illness.

However, cookie dough that is made safely with pasteurized eggs or pasteurized liquid egg products can be consumed raw safely. Many commercially available cookie dough products are made with these ingredients.

Wash the egg shell and you are good.  I have heard it's the chicken poop that carries salmonela.  Wash the egg shells before cracking the egg.

I wash mine..and the other day my toddler got in the trash (because it's fun!) and pulled out an egg shell and was crunching it (GAG)...he's still whole and healthy today.  NOT that I recommend letting them eat from the trash let alone egg shells.  With an almost two year old it is what happens when you take a second to go use the bathroom.

salmonela is found on the egg shell rather than within the egg itself so if youre careful when cracking the egg you lower your chances of getting salmonella greatly. i always ate raw cake mix and cookie dough as a kid - it was the best part of baking! i also allow my daughter to do the same.

Ummm... I'd have to disagree. I have been eating raw cookie dough since before I could talk. It was made by my mom from scratch and it contained raw eggs. I have never once gotten sick or anything like that and neither have my sibligs or friends who have eaten raw cookie dough with raw eggs in it. I'm not doubting that raw eggs CAN give salmonella, but if you use fresh eggs that haven't been sitting in the fride for ove 2 weeks or out in the sun, I don't think it's THAT big a problem. Also, for breakfast I usually have a drink made of raw eggs, milk or fruit juice. It is what my mother had when she was little and she is healthy as can be. My Grandmother had raw cookie dough and the same breakfast drink and lived to be 101. Raw eggs aren't as bad as eveyone thinks
