Food Cravings During Pregnancy

I'm pregnant, and I find myself craving ice cream and pickles. What's up with that?
Many women crave specific foods during their pregnancy. Sweets and salty foods tend to be the most common. Although these cravings are strong, it is unclear why they occur.

Research has indicated there is no evidence that these cravings are due to a nutritional deficiency. It is all right to satisfy these cravings, especially the healthy food items such as sweet fruits and crunchy vegetables. For those not-so-healthy cravings, try to find healthy substitutions, or eat them in moderation. So, if you're craving ice cream for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, try substituting non-fat frozen yogurt.

Some women crave nonfood items such as ice, dirt and clay. This is called pica. Doctors don't know exactly what causes these cravings. Some believe these cravings stem from a lack of iron or other minerals in the diet; however, this is not proven. If you are experiencing these types of cravings, inform your doctor immediately.

I am almost 10 weeks along and havent had any cravings yet... I heard that if you are taking prenatal vitamins it cuts the cravings. Your body craves what your body needs so if you are getting the nutrients you need, you probably won't crave much. =)
