Can prenatal massage help with my back pain and sciatica?

Massage therapy is not intended to replace regular prenatal care, however it does provide a host of possible benefits for the physical and emotional issues that arise during pregnancy. Prenatal massage helps to reduce stress and promote relaxation through the use of massage techniques designed to benefit the cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems. Massage increases blood and lymph circulation, reducing swelling and encourages nourishment and hydration of muscle tissue.

Specific issues, such as back pain and sciatica, often are associated with postural distortions and repetitive stress issues. A trained massage therapist is able to identify and treat these conditions.

Massage also has proven beneficial in labor and delivery by improving the mother's kinesthetic awareness, helping her to participate more actively in the birthing process.
