Nutrition During Pregnancy
What foods are best for me to eat while pregnant?During pregnancy, a woman's nutrient needs increase. The specific nutrients most women should be concerned with during pregnancy are calcium, iron, folic acid and zinc. While there is no single super food that provides all of the nutrients you'll need when you're pregnant, there are a variety of these nutrients in the foods that you commonly eat.
Look for fruit and vegetables that are colorful—especially those that are dark green, orange, bright yellow and red. Dark, leafy greens such as spinach and kale are an excellent source of nutrients. Lean meats such as chicken, turkey or beef are an excellent source of lean protein, and beef also is a great source of iron. Low-fat dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese provide protein and calcium. Grains such as whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta and whole grain crackers also are good choices. By eating a variety of lean and healthful foods like those and taking your prenatal vitamins, you can feel confident that you're getting the nutrients you need during pregnancy.
