I Want My Bugaboo!

Yes, it's the Mercedes of strollers, and, yes, it's seriously expensive. But my baby and I deserve the very BEST! Don't we?

Submitted by DevaD

I am not a materialistic person. I normally couldn't care less about labels. I happily wear T-shirts from Target and flip-flops from the drug store. But when it came time to buy my stroller, I became the ultimate material girl.

"I'm not spending $800 on a stroller," my husband said when I brought up the Bugaboo for the 50th time.

"$800 is for the Frog. I want the Cameleon."

Now he looked at me like I was an amphibian.

I was furious. How could he do this to me? Why couldn't he understand that we had to have a Bugaboo? I flat out refused to be the only mother on the Upper East Side of Manhattan without one! What would people think? I'd be ashamed to walk down Madison Avenue … not to mention Fifth Avenue! I threatened my husband that if he bought us a Graco, I'd never leave the apartment. People would think that I was married to a janitor! (No offense to the janitors' wives out there; I'm sure you're very happy.)

I know I sound like a princess, but I'm really not. (I'm not!) Sometimes, in a calm moment—usually when I get a solicitation from Save the Children or some charity reminding me of the poverty and misfortune in the world—I find I'm actually appalled by my desire to plop down a grand on a glorified pushcart that will just get barfed on, pooped on and juiced on by my baby. That feeling doesn't last long, though.

How did I become so insecure that I need a certain stroller to feel I can make it with the Manhattan mom set? Is this the beginning of a slippery slope of competitive mom hell that will continue with preschools, pancake recipes and Vera Wang prom dresses? Or will I eventually rise above it and proudly parade my baby in a $30 stroller and send her to her senior prom in something from Target? Doubtful. I wish I were that thrifty, but I'm not. I just want my Bugaboo. No amount of self-reflection is going to change that.

OOOO, I love this stroller, too cute!!! I need a smaller stroller for my son, all I have is my double jogger, so to go anywhere I either have to try to fit it in the stores (no easy feat) or I have to find a buggy and put my son in our Snugly. PLLLEEEAAASSEEE let it be us!

That's great that he's doing so well in school. My neighbor has a son named Milo who's in kindergarten and he's a smart kid but he's just all over the place when it comes to school. They think he has ADHD but I think he's just not interested so he acts up. I'm glad a whole lot of exciting things are going on for you. So have you set an official date for the wedding yet?

I think the bugaboos are ugly, but since I was 5 I've wanted a carriage pram - silvercross too. So I will be getting a Silvercross 3D.

As a general rule I have no problem buying second hand or shopping at Target or Walmart for what I want or need. BUT, we all have a "thing" we absolutely HAVE TO HAVE for our new babies. My husband had to have an exersaucer for our son, so his mother bought one for us. I had to have a jumperoo for our daughter. Didn't have the money to buy it ourselves and apparently noone else agreed, so we didn't get it. This time around I want a good baby carrier/wrap thingy, so my friend is insisting she buy one for me. And for some god unknown reason I'm being picky as hell about the diaper bag I want. Still haven't found the ultimate one. Not in my price range, anyway. My husband actually got nice and told me to just get whatever one I want, regardless. He may have made a mistake there! haha I say, if it makes you happy and you can afford it and even remotely in a roundabout way justify it (even if by justification, it's only the but-honey-it-will-make-me-sooooo-happy kind) then buy your bugaboo! Then stroll forth and be happy.

This article disheartens me. Sure I would like a Bugaboo or an Orbit (which I think is much cooler and more expensive), but I'd rather have enough money to buy my kid food. For the rich in Manhattan, though, money is no object and strollers are accessories that advertise your wealth ala a designer bag. While my husband and I--middle class parents-to-be who make a decent living--worry about how or if we can afford daycare, etc., this woman is worrying about what people will think of her if she buys a safe, yet inexpensive stroller instead of a status symbol. I just can't wrap my head around how people like her think.

I too am not one of those super stylish materialistic mums (Wal-Mart has great stuff!) but I "convinced " my husband to get the bugaboo when we were pregnant with our first son. It has been SO worth the money - I am pregnant with #3 and the bugaboo is still in great condition. We use it as the bassinet for the first few weeks and then with the skate board on the back used it with both sons (3 & 4 years old now). I'm SO glad we sacrificed some things and bought it. So many of my friends have had to buy several strollers to meet all their needs. For us the bugaboo has done it all.

All I have to say is that I want My Bugaboo too, and although we don't make big bucks, I convinced my husbad about getting it...regardless I was just browsing e-bay and there are plenty for half price... so if $850 isn't appealing, e-bay can help!

All right girls! It's Just a stroller. This kind of wasteful spending is the kind of thing that is going to leave you with kids Who are 13 and have Tasty written on their butts. The major problem here is not the money spent. Spending good money on something the is quality is good economic sense. The problem is "why". This is an extension of buying Jeanco's (can any one guess how old I am? LOL)because "everyone" else has them. That kind of thinking will carry on to your child(ren) and then where will you be when you should, or have to, say "no". People seem to think that if you don't spend $850 on something that isn't going to last until graduation, that some how you are less of a parent. Not true. I'll say one more thing and then get off my proverbial soap box. I know every one situation is different, so this is not a blanket statement to cover everyone. When I was preggers with my first (he is now three) When went out and laid down some, for us at the time, real money and bought the graco travel system, even splurged on the classic Pooh edition (*announcers voice* "Only available at Target"). We used the stroller about ten times, before the baby grew out of his infant seat. Then we bought an umbrella stroller for ten bucks at...Walmart *gasp*. For the second baby, we didn't even use it that much. There enough said. LOL Hope every has healthy and happy babies.

I AGREE!!! and I got the same response...I've already said all I want is a CHAMELEON for the baby shower but no. Everyone is talking about expensive and blah, blah, blah...I get a lot of my clothes from sample sales (I work in the heart of the fashion district) so why can't I splurge on this one item?? I agree with you wholeheartedly girl!! :)

"....For those who don't have the bugaboo - they end up having two or three strollers - so it almost works out to the same expense" I bought a Hauck pram at the begining which my son only fit in till he was 3months old (in that attic for the next one) and i then bought a McLaren Techno XT and hes still using it now and its still in tip top condition and hes 3. All together its cost less than £300 and i definately wont be needing to buy anymore.
