Natalie Morales on Rotavirus: It's a Nasty, Nasty Bug

Anyone who's had to go through it like me will agree that having a vaccine for rotavirus is probably a good thing.

I can understand why people would be skeptical of the new rotavirus vaccine, but if you have a child in day care or in a playgroup, it's good to be aware of rotavirus, because it's so contagious and so severe.

My 5-year-old son, Josh, got rotavirus when he was a baby (before the vaccine came out). Then I got it, then my husband got it ... and it was two days of the worst diarrhea and misery ever. I was happy when I heard that a vaccine came out, and I quickly got my younger son, Luke, vaccinated.

Even if your child isn't vaccinated, encourage frequent hand washing so there's less chance they'll catch something highly contagious and gross. Trust me: This is one bug you don't want your kids to get! It's horrible!

Besides being a mom, Natalie Morales is best known as a national correspondent and co-anchor for the Today show.

Awful! My daughter had this virus just before she turned three and had to be hospitalized for four days. She was so utterly dehydrated when she was admitted after only 24 hours of getting sick, that she couldn't even cry when they were hooking her up to the IV and catheter- she just lay there almost lifeless. Her kidneys were beginning to fail. All of this because of a virus I had never even heard of at that time- but most of the kids admitted in that wing had the same thing! I'm glad there is now a vaccine available and I hope it will save many people from the same situation.
