Pickles, Ice Cream and Juicy Hot Dogs

Isn't that what a pregnant gal should be eating?

Submitted by Mamamia

This morning I seriously considered calling my mother-in-law and telling her that I've been craving broccoli and spinach and lean protein and running five miles every morning. I would've really impressed her with my incredible health-conscious attitude and my love for all things green. I could've bragged about how I'm going through my pregnancy eating healthy snacks and doing moderate exercise, all while working full-time and keeping a perfectly clean house. I really considered it … but it all would've been a lie.

The truth is, I've spent the last four days doing everything I can to resist my intense cravings for hot dogs while wallowing in my own exhaustion on the couch with a sink full of dirty dishes and four loads of laundry sitting on the floor. And isn't that the way it's supposed to be? I mean, c'mon, healthy food and exercise while preggo? Are you kidding me?!

Yesterday, I drove by 7-Eleven and saw a picture of a hot dog and literally had to force myself to keep driving instead of pulling up, running inside, smothering it in mustard and consuming it in two gulps. I don't know what's wrong with me! Oh, wait, yes I do, I'm PREGNANT and that wreaks havoc with my system. I don't usually like frankfurters at all, but right now a big, juicy dog is pretty much at the forefront of my every waking thought.

And is that so bad? I don't think so. The fact that I'm craving hot dogs is actually a good thing (c'mon, agree with me here!). It means that I don't have morning sickness, which I did during my last pregnancy. I feel like I could consume anything and everything in sight. And why shouldn't I? Pregnancy books and mother-in-law be damned. I'm going to stuff my face and feed my cravings. OK, gotta run! The Homer Simpson in me has finally won out. I'm gonna go get that hot dog!

You arent supposed to eat hot dogs due to the nitrates and preservatives but my best friend could only stomach hot dogs while pregnant and her daughter turned out perfect :)  Everyone is different - a couple hot dogs wont hurt you if you dont overdo it. I personally cant do it just b/c I was told hot dogs could be bad... Thank GOD I havent been craving them anyway! I've been craving nachos and salsa con quesa, potatoes - mashed, baked, roasted, WHATEVER! Carbs galore.  ICE CREAM... and fruit! at least there's something good for me in that pile of garbage!

I looked online and it said the reason hot dogs aren't good during pregnancy is because of a bacteria called Listeria. The article also said as long as you heat it to 160 degrees they should be fine. Also, avoid cross contamination between foods you will eat raw and foods you will cook. I've added the link in case anyone would like to read it. http://www.americanpregna... Hope this helps!

In week 6 here....it's been salt, salt, and more salt. I'm on Prometrium to help sustain the pregnancy, so most of the time whatever I eat practically runs through me. I do crave chips, though. Chips and any kind of dip with cream cheese in it!

I'm almost 6 weeks now and have been craving celery and ranch dip for the last month...What's funny is I have hated the taste or smell of celery since I was little and made sure to avoid anything with celery in it. Now I can't stop eating it. First sign I was pregnant lol. I love hot dogs too especially the ones from the movie theater when I go see a movie, but I was told to stay away from hotdogs while pregnant?!?

Oops I guess my response goofed, and cut the first part out...lol Just think of food as energy, peanuts instead of chips, non-fat milk and light sugar herseys syrup instead of a chocolate bar, crystal light or juice instead of soda or sweets, twinkies rice-crispy cakes instead of ice cream or cake, store bought hamburgers and hot dogs versus fast food ones. Anything you get at the store is going to be a healthier choice than fast food, and a lot of stuff now is packaged for easy convience of just heating it up. So the same time it would take you to wait in the drive-thru at a fast food you would already have your food heated up at home or work. I worked on a cardiac ward in the hospital for a few years, so you learn and get motivated very quickly on whats really worth it. Thanks soo much for reading and have a wonderful week.

So give in to your cravings but choose a healthier substitute if possible based off of how much nutrients or energy is this going to give me.

my major cravings have been chinese food, banana cream pie, and pretzels. I could eat those for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day and be satisfied!

Well I don't know about cravings but I am 6 weeks today and I can officially say this is the first time i've ever scarfed peas. Now if only my husband could get preggers so that he would eat his veggies.but what I really want is somewhere between a gyro and a shish kebab, so basically meat on a stick. lol with that white sauce the pakistani's put on it YUM YUM do I dare take a 30 minute bus ride just for GYRO?, my kingdom for a strawberry milkshake. Onion rings, burgers probably not much really healthy. The weirdest thing happened last week I was on a bender for BK veggie burgers and o-rings and orange push pop's I have no Idea where it came from, or had no idea rather, as I found out a few days ago I'm pregger,I now know who was craving what, I was on vacay so I conveniently forgot that I was even a woman.ROFL.

Right now...if I'm preganant I'd be around 4-5 weeks along. It's a little early for cravings...but all I want hotdogs. In fact that's what I had for breakfast yesterday.

I get these crazy ideas in my head out of the blue where I SWEAR I can taste and smell the food as if it right in front of me... But my eyes are bigger than my morning sickness. Now that it is finally passing (the morning sickness) I have an urge to over eat at one sitting and make myself sick... gezz.

I've always battled with food cravings, I was anorexic through out high school and that caused a lot of health problems. Through the whole winter I was craving fresh berries and other stuff that wasn't "in season". Usually I want veggies & noodles or fruit & cereal. I'm in my last trimester and now I walk by anything & my brain says I need that now. This happens more often with cheese danishes & pies...safe to say I havent given into a danish craving in over a week. Of course on my way home this weekend I wanted to stop at an ice cream shop so I also didn't look back came right home but ate almost a whole head of cauliflower, 2 days later I still want ice cream so Im going to to the kitchen to make a low cal/fat free berry smoothie..I'm not a hot dog fan, not sure what to substitute that with but here is something I found online that might help with other cravings. http://www.naturopathywor...

I haven't been pregnant long, or at least aware of it, but so far, my cravings have been chicken strips, reeses peanut butter cups with milk, and salad. It's the strangest thing; you're doing something completely unrelated to food, and suddenly, this gigantic picture pops into your mind. You can smell it, see it, taste it. And you suddenly bug your eyes out and go, "I want that." lol, I'm thankful in a way that I was craving salad this morning, I hope that means I'll want healthy food. . .at least some of the time. XD
