Waiting on Those Two Blue Lines

When five days seem like forever.

This whole "Am I pregnant or not?" thing is driving me crazy! In my perfect world, I would wake up the morning after having sex, pee on a stick and know right then and there whether that egg was fertilized. Having to wait days (weeks!) to take a pregnancy test is stress that a possibly pregnant woman simply doesn't need. Someone needs to get on it and invent the morning-after test. It'd be worth a fortune.

I've been scouring the Internet to find out exactly when is really the absolute, without-a-doubt earliest point that a pregnancy test can come back positive. Of course, sources vary. While I did find a few articles that said I could take a home pregnancy test as many as seven days before my period, the general consensus online was that it's best to wait until the day that your period should start. Are they crazy?! That seems like an eternity!

Maybe I'm the crazy one, but I went to the drugstore and bought a pregnancy test. The box said, "Positive results sooner than any other test!" across the front. Inside, the directions said that if taken four days before a missed period, a woman who is actually pregnant has a 53% chance of getting a positive result. Those odds are good enough for me.

My period is due in five days. I explained to my husband over dinner last night that if I took the test, I'd have a 53% chance of getting an accurate result. For some reason, my husband (who used to be a math teacher) didn't like those odds. He rationally pointed out that if I just wait until Friday, the day my period is actually due, I'll have a 98% chance of getting an accurate result. According to Mr. Rational (and, I must add, Mr. Frugal), it's a waste of money to use a pregnancy test on a day with 50-50 odds. Whatever.

I spent the rest of the evening stewing, the pregnancy test sitting on my bathroom counter, tempting me, while my husband eyed me suspiciously. My mind was whirling. "What if… what if I do get a positive result? We can tell our parents early and start planning and get all happy and excited right away! It's just one pregnancy test, just one. What's $10 in the whole scheme of things anyway?"

I took the test this morning. It was negative. The box says that three days before a missed period, you have a 68% chance of an accurate result. Here we go again. Am I insane? How can I stop obsessing? Help distract me!

I'm glad to hear that some of you tested negative so many times. I feel like I'm going crazy! I have almost every symptom there is for pregnancy, including missed period, but my hpt keep saying negative. I was testing close to every third day during the week af should have come. I finally stopped testing and made a pre-natal appointment for 8 weeks out. I figure if AF doesn't come by then, something's up and I can take a hpt closer to that date or have blood drawn.

well. me. i tried 3 pregnancy test before a get the correct result..my next mens should be Oct 8, but its already Oct 15 and haven't get mens yet, well, i tried a pregnancy test that can be bought in a cheap drug store, well, of course i got a negative result then, but Oct 25 had passed by but still my mens never came yet, well, i tried to consult to my OB, still they needed me to have a pregnancy test again to check if im preggy or not, but its a NEGATIVE again, well, i almost give up, my OB suggested a medicine that i could take, this medicine - Duphaston, is safe if ur preggy or not. if your preggy, it will kep hold ur baby but if ur not it will make u have ur mens, well, the medicine seems a little expensive to me, well, before taking the medicine, wat i've planned was, maybe i'l just took a medicine by the end of Oct, im sure if im not preggy i should have my mens sooner or later Oct. but Oct 31 comes and no mens yet, well, my last option is, to make a test again before taking the medicine.

Morning Oct 31, 4:00, PT got POSITIVE!!!! shocks!!! well, OB said, maybe the hCG of my urine is not too hign to be detected by the pregnancy test i used before..well, im in my 8 weeks now and having lots of morning sicknessss..but still holding on..im excited to see my soon to be baby..

We have 2 wonderful kids 5 yrs and 3 yrs! We want another one really bad. I had my IUD removed on the 24th of Sept, and I had said in the past I KNOW when I am preggers!! I don't think I can wait 3 more weeks to take a test! It's going to eat me alive!! I am however not looking forward to the nausea! My Dr. said that since we haven't had any problems conceiving in the past it should take a month!! Anyone out there have experience with IUD removal and getting pregnant???

Report Abuse 		I am 33 yr old i have a 16, 13 , &10 yr old. last month i went to n carolina to a specialist and had my tubes untied. i ovulated 2 - 6th or whatever had sex 2-5th before he had to go back to ky. i want to take a test so bad its driving me insane. i never wanted my tubes tied by ex and dr took care of that.

Report Abuse 		i took first response gold. cheap and it was accurate. the best thing to do to get preggers is have regular sex and maybe even watch tv while having sex!!! LOL. it could be neg but remember that sperm stay alive in you for a few days. and wit hthe fzzy math of pregnancy it can take 3 weeks for you to really get pregnant. the worst thing to do is worry it can make you not get pregnant. good luck chick a dee!! dont worry about ovulating... dont worry about ANYTHING

Report Abuse 		not completely accurate, I was pregnant a year ago, I had 5 negative urine tests (which included drs office/hospital) and 3 negative blood tests at 5 weeks, and now i'm going through it again, I'm late, at least 5 days, possibly 10 (irregular) and 2 negative hpts

Report Abuse 		I checked the day I was supposed to get my period and it came out positive! So I think it'll be more accurate if u wait til u miss ur period and check it cuz by then yur already like four weeks or so! So that less time waiting! Even if u have like another 38 weeks haha

Report Abuse 		I have stressed for the last week, I'm not due for another week. I am going away for the weekend to visit my sister and I am hoping that spending time with her will distract me but the drive there, solo may I add since my DH has to stay home, may put me over the edge. As far as searching the web, the earliest I saw stated that at 5 days pre-period you have a 55% chance...so we'll see. I will be coming home Monday and probably rushing to the rest room to "test".

Report Abuse 		i have 2 kids already and hubby an i wanna try for 3rd even though evrybody says were bleepig crazy for even thinking it. i just got my iud out on the 28th of sept and my fertile days r from the 29th of sept to the 5th of oct so idk if its awesome timing or sucky tming cause i coud still have the contraception in my system but were trying all week and im so obsessed with it that im scouwering sites instead of trying to get my mind off of it i need jus as much help in getting destracted. my daughtrs in school all day and i got my son but im not one for going outside and dont have my car anymore nor bus fair to go c friends to occupy my mind what can i do in the house besides clean ten ways from sunday.

Report Abuse 		The best advice I can give you is using ovulation tests. I got pregnant on the first real "try" at it by using one of those. The kicker is I diddnt even know I was pregnant until 7 weeks because I diddnt stress over it at all. Go to Walgreens and get the ovulation tests and go for it 5 days in a row around the time it says you will be ovulating and dont stress. Enjoy the process, because once you are pregnant... its a whole new ballgame. Best of luck to you.

Report Abuse 		I want to say I have read the other posts and I agree the first month after i stoppped the pill i obsessed but then in my mind i was convinced i wouldnt get pregnant becaus ewe had been trying so hard blah blah blah in reality i convinced myself i wouldnt and just didnt think about it and the next month it happened:)

Report Abuse 		I just want to say I took my test five days before and got a positive result then i went for a blood test and that night i took another home test just to be sure. The blood test came back o low i knew i was pregnant but HAD TO WAIT another week and take another blood test. So my advice I know it is annoying but just wait to take the test then when it is time youll be able to take care of everything your gonna have to wait anyway.

I just did the same thing, negative, yet I know or at least truly feel like I am pregnant, and we are so excited, he said to wait to take it and I couldn't wait, I took it tonight, and it was negative,....... Report Abuse 		I've been waiting over week. I even went to the doctor on Tuesday and he sent out for a blood test because it was to early to tell. It's torture. Tomarrow morning will be the big day i take the test. I've been spotting allwek and I have a doctor's appointment in another 4 weeks,but I jsut need to know.

Report Abuse 		I have been doing the same exact same thing....my period just happened to come today, very lightly but it's here. I was supposed to start last Sunday (a week ago) so I went crazy taking tests last week all to come up negative. It didn't start there though. I have some ovulation tests so I knew when I was supposed to ovulate so we were like bunnies that week. Well of course after every thime I wanted to take a test to see if it worked. I have taken 5-6 tests this month because I want to be pregnant so bad.

Report Abuse 		haha, why are we woman so crazy, we tried for almost a year to get pregnant, well mentally a year physically I was only probably ovulating for about the last five months before we got pregnant. It was insane, i was going crazy and had taken so many pregnancy tests because people would think I was pregnant, aka my sisters. or I would "think" hope that I was, well the minute I stopped obessing it happened. It was so weird I felt very sick, flu like for a week and my husband says when was your last period and I was like oh a month or two ago, and he says hey maybe you are pregnant, and by this time, my mind had given up so I thought no way. well sure enough I took a test and POSITIVE, and my husband says are you sure and I said yeah I think i have seen enough negative tests to know what a positive test looks like!!! So long story short we are expecting our first baby in Aug and my advice is truly do not OBSESS about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is so true, I know it is hard not to but find a distraction, we got a puppy while trying and my mind was refocused!! good luck!
