Alternatives for Prenatal Vitamins

Considering that your prenatal vitamin is the size of your fist, it had better contain all your essential vitamins and minerals. Of course, all that nutrition won't do you any good if you can't get the thing down your throat. If those bulky pills are making you sick, ask your doctor or pharmacist about chewable or liquid versions that might be easier to stomach... and easier to swallow.

I'm not very big on pills--especially horrid tasting horse pills like prenatal vitamins so I've been cutting my pills into 4 pieces.  I also take them with a big glass of chocolate milk which totally covers the taste and because it's a thick liquid, it helps me swallow the pills much easily.  And taking it at night just before bed does help with the nausea but it also makes you wake up in the middle of the night to relieve yourself of the big glass of milk.   But this is what's been working for me for the last week.  However, I'm still on a hunt for chewable vitamins.  My doctor said as long as their is 400 mg of folic acid in the vitamin, it'll do for a prenatal source.  I think I may try and look at the giant bulk bottle of chewable vitatmins at Costco.

I was told by a friend that has a couple kids that are all health and doing well, that her prenatal vitamins made her sick so she took two flinstone vitamins a day to be equivalent to her prenatals. Any opinions cause mine make me sick too and i was thinking about trying it

I have the same issue ladies, and am on my third child........I learned with my first one, to always take a gel or liquid filled, and a must is.......always take at NIGHT just before going to sleep!  It has worked for me!  I am a nurse too, and am quessing that physiologically, it breaks down while you are sleeping, and you don't have to experience the woozies during this process.

Vitamins have always made me so nauseous, and these are worse. Prior to pregnancy I had been taking the women's one a day drink mix. I found if I drank it through out the entire day I was ok. I cut my prenatals into 3 or 4 pieces and take them through out the day. So far so good!

I can't take them either... I swallow them but I think they are so hard on the stomach (even when I take them on a full stomach!) I get nauseated and vomit. Or if I do digest them I get insanely constipated it's HORRIBLE! Although I eat a lot of bran and fiber to help, doesn't really work those pills are evil! lol

I live in Canada, my doctor and my gyno both dont' have any alternatives to prenatal vitamins that might make me feel less sick. I have heard of liquid and chewable but doctors and pharmasists say there isn't any for pregnancy. Is this just something available in the US? I usually take it with food using my evening meal. Still feel sick, why is that? any suggestions or help please! By the way I have tried flinstones but still sick, don't throw up just feel sick.

On my last appointment (with a NP, the doc was too busy), I complained about the prenatatls making me vomit, so she gave me a huge bag full of samples to try. I actually found one, called "Prefera OB", which comes in really small and neat purple pills, and was harmless on my stomach and on my gagging. It's RX only, but I'm definitely gonna stick to it!

I wasn't able to take them with water so I started taking them with a tall glass of milk and now they stay down no problems.

I've heard that you should try taking them with something other than water and drink as little with the pill as possible, like a sip of juice. Might be worth a try if you already shelled out some money on a bottle.

When I was pregnant with mu son, I could not bear the smell of that horse pill. So I mushed it up in a home made smoothie every day. I done the same with my daughter but she really made me quesy so I just took liquid vitamins until I could stomach the real things.

My doctor let me use children's chewables with iron and a supplementary 800mcg folic acid tablet instead. Much easier to get down. I found that biting them into pieces and having them during dinner helps tremendously.

Good Idea! I found that I had to take mine later in the day-if I took it too soon in the morning it definently wouldn't stay down.
