Plan Your Labor and Delivery Hospital Trip

Wanna know the biggest buzz-kill to the exhilaration of impending baby-birthing? Bumper-to-bumper traffic. Save yourself some stress by making a test run to the hospital and paying attention to traffic patterns. You'll want to plan a rush hour route that doesn't include the busiest road in town … unless you've always dreamed of delivering on a highway's shoulder. Fun.

I have to say that my due date is seriously planed in an absolutely crazy way. Im from Poland. my husband is Irish, and we live in Ireland. But, after my sis in law give a birth of a child here in irish hospital... Im very concerned about skills of irish docs. My due date is in the end of june, and in march im flyin over to Poland, where I have medical care i trust, my doc who's my friend since childhood, and my mom who will be such a wonderful help. thanks God there's no traffic in the air... :D

Labor for a first time mom averages 12 hours! So, it is unlikely that many women will no make it to the hospital in time. How many women do you actually know that gave birth in a car... none. But to ease worries, hire a doula. She goes to your house and helps you figure out if its really the time to go to the hospital, plus all the other great services she provides. And no I am not a doula, just someone who LOVED having extra, expert, compasionate help during labor.

all of my appointments are at the hospital where I will have the baby. it takes about 24 minutes to get there during good traffic and about 45 during busy traffic. lol or 15 either way if my husband is driving.

We have four routes that we can take and I told my b/f that I want us to do a test run on all the routes to see which encounter low speeds, less or more traffic and the quickest time possible. My guesstimate is probably a 10-15 minutes on the highway route. We'll see.

I am lucky enough to work at the hospital I will deliver my son at in about 2 months. This is my third child and all will be born at the same hospital. It is about 15 minutes from my house and since my husband and I both work there we know several back ways to get there in a hurry!

The information I just read was comforting and calming to my manic attacks I ahve been having. I work close to downtown D.C and my hospital is all the way in Annapolis so I have already packed my overnight bag filled with cosmetics, pj's, undies, and toiletries and placed it in the trunk just in case i cannot drive from work to home to get the bag then drive all the way to the hospital. I have looked up an alternate route to the hospitla and it works for me. I keep everything in my GPS system just in case I panic and forget where I am going! I work everyday from 9-5:30 and when I get off the traffic is always a complete gridlock. My fiance works an hour and a half away from me so waiting for him to pick me up was just a thought. Now I have a designated employee here to drive me to the hospital using my car, just in case my contractions get severe.I am not worried anymore like I was in the beginning.

That really does take the fear out the whole, "Oh crap, what if I go into labor during rush-hour" thing. Yes, this fear has been plaguing me.
