Glucose Tolerance Test Alternative

You know that sticky orange syrup drink that you have to drink at the OB for your glucose tolerance test? It's not the only option! Ask your OB if you can eat something else instead. My OB let me eat a stack of pancakes smothered in maple syrup (yummy!).

It tasted like a melted orange popsicle to me, but I sure would have enjoyed a couple of candy bars, jelly beans or stack of pancakes WAY better! Just be glad if you only had to do it once, I had to do it 3 times - a 1 hr, 2 hr and 3 hr (where they stick you once before and then once every hour) Then, they put me on a diet for diabetes (and I'm onl 140 lbs, having gained 20 during my pg) After the diet started, I had to go again to get stuck twice more.

The first time my Dr. gave me the bottle to drink, I jokingly said, "Um, can I mix this with vodka??"  They didn't find it funny. I'm a clean cut girl, it's not like I could have been mistaken for being serious.

Report Abuse 		I just got my Glucose test done today and I am so crappy feeling. I just want to lay around the house and sleep. it to gave me a headache and the hour i waas waiting before they drew my blood i was really dizzy and felt sick to my stomach! :(

Report Abuse 		It gave me a headache and made me feel so icky all day the first time that on my 2nd & 3rd pg I declined the test. I said if they saw ANY symptoms of GD then I would take the test right away. But if I had to eat pancakes, I suppose that wouldn't be so bad! I've also heard of raisins or jelly beans being allowed, but I'm sure jelly beans would make me feel sick too.

Report Abuse 		My cousin's midwife has her eat 2 Milky Way candy bars. My doctor just laughed and thought I was joking. At the hospital where I drank the gross stuff they claimed it's new and better than before. Yeah, right.
